Situated on the extreme South of Portugal, this part of the territory was the last to be conquered from the Moors by the Portuguese king in 1292. Traces of the Moorish presence are still seen in its unique architecture - terraces, chimneys and whitewashed houses.

The coastline is notable for picturesque limestone caves and grottoes, particularly around Lagos, which are accessible by powerboat. Praia da Marinha, Lagoa was classified as one of the 100 most beautiful and well preserved beaches of the world. As you travel across the Algarve, amidst its hills and plains filled with places of great ecological interest, rich in biodiversity and ecosystems, you will feel as though you are passing through an area full of different traditions, unchanged for many centuries.

The region's built heritage is something you cannot afford to miss. The architecture of the whitewashed houses, with their
brightly-coloured mouldings and remarkably beautiful chimneys, the church belfries and the museums, all reveal particular memories of the ancestors of the Algarve people and help to make this such a special destination.

The handicraft is skilfully manufactured by the local craftsmen, who make use of longstanding, ancestral techniques and produce an excellent range of pottery, woven baskets, copper and brass articles, or other pieces made of linen and jute.

Its gastronomy is a superb menu that offers a wide variety of Mediterranean highland aromas and flavours and includes dishes made with fish and shellfish, such as the famous "Caldeirada de Peixe" (fish stew) or the typical "Cataplana de Ameijoas" (a dish prepared with cockles). There are traditional restaurants to please everyone, bars and casinos and for those whose batteries never run out, countless discos with wide open doors to inviting you to dance the night away.
